چکیده

Proton acceleration experiments by irradiation of intense ultra-violet lasers with thin foil targets were conducted. Energies and efficiencies of the accelerated protons were investigated over the target thickness from several mm to 50 nm using various materials. In order to irradiate the very thin foil targets, the discharge pre-amplifier in the previous system was removed to reduce amplified spontaneous emission which disturbed the main pulse interactions. A Thomson parabola ion spectrometer with CR39 plastic nuclear track detectors were used to observe spectra of the accelerated protons. The maximum energies and efficiencies of accelerated protons increased with decreasing the target thickness rather than the product of the density and thickness of the targets. These results were explained by a geometrical effect on hot electron recycling.

Modelling the effect of laser focal spot size on sheath- accelerated protons in intense laser--foil interactions

We present an approach to modelling the effect of the laser focal spot size on the acceleration of protons from ultra-thin foil targets irradiated by ultra-short laser pulses of intensity 1016–1018 W cm−2. An expression is introduced for the proton acceleration time, which takes account of the time taken for the laser-accelerated electrons, which expand laterally at the rear surface of the targ...

High-intensity laser-driven proton acceleration: influence of pulse contrast.

Proton acceleration from the interaction of ultra-short laser pulses with thin foil targets at intensities greater than 10(18) W cm(-2) is discussed. An overview of the physical processes giving rise to the generation of protons with multi-MeV energies, in well defined beams with excellent spatial quality, is presented. Specifically, the discussion centres on the influence of laser pulse contra...

Active manipulation of the spatial energy distribution of laser-accelerated proton beams.

The spatial energy distributions of beams of protons accelerated by ultrahigh intensity (>10(19)Wcm2) picosecond laser pulse interactions with thin foil targets are investigated. Using separate, low intensity (<10(13)Wcm2) nanosecond laser pulses, focused onto the front surface of the target foil prior to the arrival of the high intensity pulse, it is demonstrated that the proton beam profile c...

Forward ion acceleration in thin films driven by a high-intensity laser

A collimated beam of fast protons, with energies as high as 1.5 MeV and total number of greater, similar10(9), confined in a cone angle of 40 degrees +/-10 degrees is observed when a high-intensity high-contrast subpicosecond laser pulse is focused onto a thin foil target. The protons, which appear to originate from impurities on the front side of the target, are accelerated over a region exten...

Influence of micromachined targets on laser accelerated proton beam profiles

High intensity laser-driven proton acceleration from micromachined targets is studied experimentally in the target-normal-sheath-acceleration regime. Conical pits are created on the front surface of flat aluminium foils of initial thickness 12.5 and 3 μm using series of low energy pulses (0.5–2.5 μJ). Proton acceleration from such micromachined targets is compared with flat foils of equivalent ...
